Grand Island — The Stuhr Road - Bismark Road to BNSF Railroad Concrete Overlay project is scheduled to begin next week. This project begins immediately north of the Bismark Road intersection, and ends north of the BNSF Railway crossing.
On Monday Stuhr Road will be closed from Bismark Road to the BNSF Railway crossing south of Swift Road. Traffic will be detoured one mile east to Shady Bend Road.
It is anticipated that Stuhr Road will remain closed for six weeks.
Work will consist of removing five-inches of the existing roadway by milling, leaving a base for new pavement. The existing roadway will then be overlaid with concrete pavement.
The pavement will be widened by about four feet and five-foot turf shoulders will also be constructed.
BNSF Railway will perform track maintenance at the railroad crossing during the time Stuhr Road is closed.
Plans and Specifications for constructing the concrete overlay were developed by City of Grand Island Engineering Division staff. The construction contract of $362,960 was awarded to Gehring Construction of Columbus, NE.
Updated information on the project can be accessed on the City website by going to www.grand-island.com/2013projects. Upon request, Public Works will provide email updates on the progress of the project.
