Lincoln - Gov. Dave Heineman and first lady Sally Ganem are announcing a special open house at the Governor's Residence on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10.
The event is in celebration of the 56th anniversary of the opening of the Nebraska Governor's Residence. Activities that highlight the home and the special connection to our state are planned and open to the public on the Friday and Saturday.
"Dave and I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to call this beautiful house our home," said Nebraska's first lady Sally Ganem. "We're pleased to be able to share it with the people who come through the door each and every week."
To commemorate the anniversary, there will be multiple activities occurring at the home open to the public including hosted tours of the land and garden, talks on the art collection and the inaugural dolls collection, a talk by the first lady of Nebraska, and a special dog adoption hosted by the first dog of Nebraska, Snickers.
The residence will be open Friday, with public tours from 1 - 4 p.m. From 1 - 2 p.m., Suzanne Wise from the Nebraska Arts Council will talk about the art rotated and displayed at the Residence by local Nebraska artists, from 2 - 3 p.m.
Ingrid Kirst the Executive Director of Community CROPS will speak about Urban Gardening in the first lady's garden on the grounds, and from 3 - 4 p.m., Betty Kappel of the Great Plains Doll Club will give a presentation on the inaugural gowns worn by Nebraska's first ladies as featured in the first lady's doll collection.
On Saturday, public tours are from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
At 10 a.m. there will be a dog adoption hosted by Capital Humane Society and first dog of Nebraska Snickers. At 11 a.m. first lady Sally will discuss a day in the life of the first lady of Nebraska. From 1 - 2 p.m. there will be a second opportunity to enjoy the presentation of the first lady's doll collection. Throughout both days, a video on the remodeling process will be screened.
