"We can no longer be a small spark for children," was the main message from guest speaker Principal El during Monday's Be The One campaign kick off at Grand Island's Heartland Event Center.
Teachers as well as area youth volunteers gathered for the event; and for many, believing in youth and empowering them is where it all begins.
Heartland United Way President Karen Rathke says, "I think we just need more of that one on one time for kids. Whether it's your neighborhood kids or whether it's someone you have a formal arrangement with. If you're a troop leader or a mentor or you go in every week and your reading to kids, it's about becoming engaged."
