Students heading back to school is an exciting time for many families, but it can also be a time of concern for the parents of young children who walk or ride their bike to school.
Healthy Hastings and its Share Our Streets campaign is reminding everyone to be extra careful as school begins in the region.
The Hastings Police Department will be on hand to monitor Hastings Public Schools during August and September, reminding drivers to observe crosswalk laws and speed limits.
Program officials are reminding drivers that the law states they must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and give people on bicycles and walkers and joggers three feet of space when passing.
Parents also are encouraged to remind their children to cross the street only in crosswalks and pay attention to cars. Children on bicycles should ride single file with the traffic when riding to school.
