Update: Victim Named in GI Crash Involving Alleged Drunk Driver

Posted: Updated:

A man accused of killing a friend in a drunk driving crash cried and shook as learned he would face felony charges.

Hermino Alamilla, 30, of Lincoln was arraigned in Hall County Court Tuesday just before noon.

He was brought to court in a wheelchair, and sobbed as judge read the accusations.

Authorities have released the name of the 29-year-old man killed in the rollover accident on Highway 281 near Grand Island.

According to the Hall County Sheriff's Department, Jerry Ray Ramirez, of Grand Island, died after being ejected from a vehicle he was riding in as it rolled across the median about a half mile north of Guenther Road. Officials say he was not wearing a seatbelt.

Witnesses say Alamilla was driving the southbound Cadillac. Preliminary reports say Alamilla lost control of the car and entered the median, where it then rolled until coming to a stop in a northbound lane.

In court, prosecutors said Alamilla was weaving on the highway while shouting obscenities at traffic.

He apparently lost control, went through the median, and rolled the Cadillac. Two passengers were ejected.

The car was then struck by a 2008 Chevy Silverado driven by 26-year-old Megan Broderick of Grand Island. She was not injured in the accident.

Alamilla was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Another passenger in the Cadillac, 23-year-old Jose Coronado, of Grand Island, required no medical attention after the accident.

Alamilla was charged with four counts: felony motor vehicle homicide, habitual criminal, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and misdemeanor obstruction of a police officer.

Judge Phillip Martin set bond at ten percent of $100,000, saying the habitual criminal charge was a "game changer".

Prosecutors say Alamilla has four prior felony convictions and two prison sentences.
