Outdoor Learning Area Greens up the Nebraska State Fair

Posted: Updated:

The return of summer–like weather comes just in time for the Nebraska State Fair, where the grounds have benefited from cooler weather and more moisture.
The Outdoor Learning Area brings native grasses to the fair, along with some shade and colorful plants.

It's not just a place to relax, but a place to learn.
Roger Andrews of the Grand Island Groundwater Guardians said, "The State Fair Foundation donated a gazebo to add to it, available year-round. That's one good thing about it. Just come out and enjoy it and there'll be a lot of identification of what the vegetation is. It'll be a great learning area all year long."

The project got off the ground from a $10,000 grant and benefits from Master Gardeners associated with UNL Extension and help from the Central Platte Natural Resources District.

Volunteers were out on Tuesday pulling weeds and trimming the grass in preparation for this year's fair.
