A 37–year old Lincoln man who police say abducted his estranged wife at gunpoint Saturday is dead of an apparent suicide, and his wife, 38-year-old Julie Hanes, has been found safe.
Hanes walked out of a cornfield northwest of Imperial in rural Chase County Sunday night after a two-day search. A few hours later, the body of Dwayne Lawrence was found by authorities near that same cornfield.
Officials say Lawrence shot himself in the head.
The Nebraska State Patrol and Imperial police spent Sunday searching the Imperial area for Lawrence, who they say kidnapped Hanes at gunpoint from the Lincoln hair salon where she works. The vehicle police believe Lawrence was driving when the couple left Lincoln was spotted in Imperial Sunday morning.
Police say Lawrence took Hanes from the Audacious Hair Salon & Massage around noon Saturday.
Court records show that Hanes filed for divorce July 30, about two weeks after getting a protection order against Lawrence. She told a judge that Lawrence had threatened her several times. He was facing several charges related to a July incident.
