The Kearney City Council has approved the development of a half-mile segment of the Canal Trailrace for recreational water activities in Kearney.
The council adopted resolution 2013-164 at Tuesday's meeting. The resolution approves a Recreational Use Agreement between the city of Kearney and Nebraska Public Power District for the water trail development.
Kearney Whitewater Association hopes to provide recreational activities such as kayaking, canoeing and tubing for the Kearney area with this new water trail. The trail would be available to the public free of charge.
are very thankful to the city council, City Manager, Mike Morgan, and his staff
and NPPD for being such great partners and their work in making this happen,"
said Carson Rowh, president of the KWA board. "We are excited to continue
working with the city to improve the green spaces and recreational
opportunities in Kearney."
According to the association, the next closest water park is over 350 miles away in Denver, Colo. Additionally, they say this project would enhance the extensive park and trail system that the city of Kearney has already
created as well as add to the beauty and ambience of the UNK campus.
