UNK Counseling Staff a Helpful Resource for Struggling Students

Posted: Updated:

Transitioning into college can be difficult for many young adults, but services provided on college campuses are available to help make those transitions easier.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney is rounding out its first week back to school, and the on campus counseling staff has found it to be a busy week in their offices.

More awareness and better promotion for counseling services are some of the main reasons behind the flow of traffic to the counseling department, and the students' willingness to seek help is encouraging to staff members.

"We've been in college so we know what it's like and we're really here to help them and not in any way be judgmental. We really try to be open with them and kid around a little bit to get them comfortable and make them feel like this is not a threatening environment. It's where we try to be help to you at UNK," says mental health therapist Faithe Kroll.

Students have been turning to staff with a broad range of issues so far this semester, from homesickness to relationship problems and depression, and even drug and alcohol issues.
