Recession Prompts Couples to Have Fewer Kids

Posted: Updated:

The recession seems to have done more than just kill jobs. It may have also prompted Americans to have fewer children.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers reported the U.S. birth rate fell to another record low last year.

There were just 63 births for every thousand women of child-bearing age, that's 15 to 44 years old.

This is the lowest birth rate since record-keeping began in 1909.

That could spell economic problems years from now as the labor pool shrinks and the population ages.

Researchers believe a major reason for the drop is related to the economy.

They reported that about 22-percent of couples said money concerns prompted them to have fewer children, or no children at all.
