Kearney city officials are warning residents to stay off the Kearney Canal/Trail Race and other local rivers and canals until floodwaters from Colorado have a chance to recede.
Buffalo County Emergency Management Director Darin Lewis had advised that no one boat, canoe, kayak or conduct any other water sports on the Platte River or the canals within Buffalo County due to the floodwaters that continue to pour in from Colorado.
Lewis says the waterways are expected to be above flood stage for several weeks and the water also may contain harmful bacteria and dangerous debris prompting the request to avoid local rivers and canals.
The National Weather Service has issue flood warnings along the South Platte, North Platte and Platte Rivers. A warning issued Tuesday afternoon said the leading edge of the flood was making its way through Dawson County and would continue eastward with minor flooding expected along the way.
