Gov. Dave Heineman has selected a new director for the state's Department of Corrections.
Michael Kenney once served as superintendent for the Hastings Correctional Center and will now be taking over the state's top spot.
"Mike is a respected Corrections professional," said Heineman. "He has 36 years of experience in corrections and 34 years with Nebraska Corrections. He'll be a good leader."
The 60-year-old Lincoln man has served as the warden of the Omaha Correctional Center since 2010, in addition to several other leadership positions over the years in other correctional facilities.
"I'm humbled and honored by Gov. Heineman's appointment," said Director Kenney. "I'm committed to meeting the challenges currently faced by the department. I'm confident in our ability to meet these challenges with public safety being the top priority."
Kenney will replace director Bob Houston, who retired this month from the position, which he had held since 2005.
