Kearney City Council has approved the 2014 budget, and thanks to the city's sales tax, property taxes for Kearney residents remain one of the lowest in the state.
Property tax in Kearney is .15 per $100 of valuation, which means if your house is valued at $100,000, you would pay $150 in property tax each year.
The city's low property tax is possible due to a 1.5 percent sales tax.
"It goes back to city council, city manager, department, department heads, supervisors, all the employees in the city do a good job at preparing their budget. They know what they need and don't ask for anything that they don't need," said Wendell Wessels, Kearney finance director.
Kearney hasn't always have a sales tax. It wasn't added until 1990, but when that happened, property taxes went from .50 per $100 to .15.
