Kearney Events Bring Awareness to Breast Cancer

Posted: Updated:

The Simply Pink annual style show is increasing breast cancer awareness and celebrating survivors.

The show is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Merryman Performing Arts Center. The free show is open to the public.

Also taking place in Kearney during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the Salon Project.

The Salon Project is an educational program where stylists around Kearney wear a special lapel button promoting awareness and hand out pamphlets with vital information about breast cancer.

The handout includes facts on breast health, breast cancer and mammogram recommendations.

Some of those facts include:

  • For women with an average risk: 1 in 8 will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • Most women who have breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease.
  • 5-10 percent is inherited, 90-95 percent is sporadic.
  • Mammograms are not perfect, but they are the best way to detect breast cancer early which can lead to less severe treatment and better chances for a cure.
  • American Cancer Society Recommendations include:
    • Learn your family history and talk to your doctor about your risk of breast cancer.
    • If your doctor determines you are at a higher than average risk, ask which screening tests are best for you.
    • Women with an average risk:
      • Have a clinical breast exam every 3 years starting at age 20 and every year starting at age 40.
      • Know how your breasts look and feel and report changes to your doctor.
      • Make healthy choices such as maintaining a healthy weight by exercising and limiting alcohol intake.
