As the days get shorter the Kearney Police Department recommends you to check your property.
Police Chief Dan Lynch said this is the time where the department typically sees a peak in theft of personal property.
He advises people to trim back their hedges and make sure all exterior lights are working. Also be sure to lock your garage and car doors.
When the days shorten and it becomes dark quicker, people are more likely to wander around and look in cars if they see something valuable.
"People will take advantage of that and if you don't practice those good habits it seems almost invariably, that we end up dealing with you taking a report on the missing bike or whatever the case may be," said Lynch.
Lynch added the importance for children to bring their toys in when they are finished playing outside.
