Tens of thousands of Nebraskans were contacted through robocalls from the state Treasurer's Office over the past few weeks aimed at finding owners of millions of dollars worth of unclaimed property.
The Treasurer's Office says because of those calls, more than $1.4 million in claims have be filed.
"Our use of
robocalls to contact owners of unclaimed property and connect them directly to
our Unclaimed Property specialists has been an extraordinary success," State
Treasurer Don Stenberg said.
Stenberg says much of the success is due to the work of Unclaimed Property Division staff members, who had to sort through lists and compile the most accurate contact information available.
The office says at least 1,551 claims can be attributed directly to the calls and thousands more are believed to have been initiated indirectly by the campaign.
The amount of unclaimed property returned to Nebraskans so far this year already exceeds the amount returned in all of 2012. So far in 2013, $8,235,229 has been returned to 14,883 people.
However, Nebraskans don't have to wait for an outreach effort like the robocalls to see if they have unclaimed property. Individuals can
search for unclaimed property anytime at www.treasurer.org, or they can call the Unclaimed Property
Division at 402-471-8497 or 877-572-9688 toll free.
