Experts Say Warm Weather in Tri-Cities Will Not Last

Posted: Updated:

Kearney, Grand Island and Hastings have all been experiencing above average temperatures this fall.

"When you have been outside this week enjoying temperatures in the upper 70s or 80s we have certainly been above normal and that's coming to a change as we head into next week," said Jeremy Wesley, lead meteorologist of the National Weather Service in Hastings.

Wesley gave some insight why it has been such a warm fall.

"The storm track has been north and we've been on the warm side of these storm systems; it has allowed us to stay on the warmer side," explained Wesely.

The Hastings meteorologist says for the next two weeks the weather will turn to below average temperatures.

The area has not yet had a freeze this season, which is unusually as there is normally at least one freeze before October 5th.

Wesley said the conditions for this year's winter are still up in the air.

"The long range outlook is for equal chances right now so there is a not a lot there to really point to above normal, snow winter or a dry winter or a warmer, cold winter," said Wesely.

Winters in the area average 30 inches of snow a year, which includes one to two storms of six or more inches of precipitation.

He advises that residents should prepare for cooler temperatures.

"Just be ready that fall is here although it doesn't feel a little more fall like it's going to be time to start getting those jackets out and starting to make your preparations to start for late fall and winter; that cooler weather on the way," said Wesely.
