New Report Says Over 2,000 Cattle Lost in Early October Snow Storm

Posted: Updated:

While the numbers are not yet definitive, a new report from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln extension office in Chadron suggests that more than 2,200 cattle died in the blizzard that hit northwest Nebraska in early October.

The office release the loss totals for Sioux and Dawes counties Monday. Scott Cotton, extension educator, says producers should document their losses which come only a little more than a year after the region's cattle population was hit by damaging wildfires.

More than 900 miles of fence line was damaged in those fires and the region's cattle population was reduced to less than 45 percent of its normal number.

Donations to help the producers experiencing cattle loss from this month's storm can be made to the First National Bank Community Foundation in Chadron.
