Some Displaced Leprino Employees Hired at McCain Foods

Posted: Updated:

Out of a job as a Ravenna cheese plant closes its doors, some workers from Leprino Foods find opportunities at a Grand Island onion ring plant.

McCain Foods has a 50 year history in Grand Island, producing onion rings and a host of appetizers for places like Arby's and Buffalo Wild Wings.

The plant was recently honored with several safety awards, something they emphasize during recruiting.

Plant Manager Troy Jemison said, "We've got a safe workplace and when we look at wages, we're competitive and in some cases better."

Among 18 new hires are several coming from Leprino Foods in Ravenna. With that plant's closure, McCain's HR chief Craig Garrett saw an opportunity to keep those workers in central Nebraska.

He said, "We reached out to Leprino, I knew the HR gentlemen there and he met me on site. We did a job fair on site and they provided full access. We're able to find work homes for these talented folks."

McCain employs more than 350 people, making it one of Grand Island's biggest employers. Yet plant officials admit they're not well known and are trying to improve on that and reach out to more potential employees.
