Youth Invited to Beef Leadership Symposium

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska youth with an interest in the local beef industry will get a chance to attend the Nebraska Youth Beef Leadership Symposium next month in Lincoln.

The symposium, with a theme of "Setting the Cornerposts for Tomorrow's Beef Industry", students will be introduced to careers and current issues in the beef industry, as well as giving students the chance to build leadership skills.

This is the second year that freshman and sophomores have been invited to the event, because the symposium's planning committee is making an effort to reach students earlier.

High school students will be divided up between two sessions at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln East Campus Animal Science Complex.

Freshman and sophomores will attend the first session on Nov. 22-23. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. on the 22nd.

This session will include more of an introduction to the beef industry; allow interaction with faculty about the current research, meat science, beef quality assurance, and marketing; give an introduction to careers; and create a project for students to work on while building their team and leadership skills.

Juniors and seniors will attend the second session the next day, Nov. 23-24. Check-in begins at 1:15 p.m. on the 24th.

This session will dive deeper into information about the beef industry, meat science and marketing aspects of the industry. The students will also work in teams to create a new beef dish with a professional chef.

Cost to register is $30 by Oct. 31 or $50 from Nov. 1-8. Rooms and meals are included in the registration.
