Kearney's Crossroads Mission Already Facing Growing Pains

Posted: Updated:

In just a short year and a half since the mission opened, Crossroads has almost doubled in capacity of guests.

Now completely full at 42, the shelter has stayed busy since it first opened its doors.

Before Crossroads, many people in the community may not have realized the need for the facility, which helps people who have fallen on hard times get back on their feet. But local officials know it is a necessary service.

"It's hurting to know that when people call that we don't have the openings to be able to house the people," said Crossroads Sight Manager Kellie Sterkel. "Especially people with families that have younger children, they have no place to go."

"Some people just have it tough now and the world's not easy anymore," said former Crossroads guest Patricia Wilhelm. "So I mean, we do, we need more space for them to help them."

Crossroads officials have already purchased extra land, in hopes to expand its services even more.
