"Honey Sunday" Helps ARC of Buffalo County

Posted: Updated:

With honey in hand, hundreds of volunteers knocked on doors Sunday, all to raise money for a good cause.

Fifty years ago, a Grand Island grocer sold honey door to door to raise money for a special education teacher; Sunday, that tradition continued in communities around the state.

More than 200 volunteers canvassed Kearney neighborhoods for ARC of Buffalo County. It's "Honey Sunday", a fundraiser to help those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

Organizers say sales of these five dollar bears go a long way so that everyone can be included.

"The funding really does make a huge ripple effect," said program Executive Director Kristen Larsen. "As far as helping provide staff we need and the staff we need to just improve the lives of people where they live, work, go to school, and play."

Volunteers sold more than 2,300 honey bears and raised just short of $13,000 after donations.

Remaining jars will be sold in other communities, churches and at Walmart over the next few weekends.
