Overton Fire Crews Respond to Grain Bin Fire

Posted: Updated:

Malfunctioning propane dryers, not electrical problems, are the suspected cause of a Sunday afternoon fire.

The Overton Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze at Brenan Farms east of town.

Fire officials are unsure of how many bushels of corn have been lost, but it's a tough blow to the farming operation's harvest season.

"This is gonna hurt some," said Overton Fire Department's Tim White. "He's a big farmer, but even this kind of a loss will hurt him some."

The bin was three-quarters full, holding about 15,000 bushels of corn.

Holes had to be cut in the side to release the grain and get water inside the bin; however, fire crews did say most of the grain will be salvageable.

Elm Creek Volunteer Fire Department was called for mutual aid.
