Crews have been working to clean up the Little Blue River, thanks to a $568,000 grant from the Environmental Trust.
The grant is being used to clear debris along the banks and in the river stream in the Republican River and Little Blue River from Webster County through Thayer County.
Project Coordinator Merle Illian says funds may run short when the get to Thayer County, but he hopes additional allocations from the Trust will allow the project to continue downstream.
In the spring after the clearing process, contractors will be going through with backhoes and spraying the willow trees along the banks and the islands of the river.
Then when the project enters its third phase,
the contractor will use discs to turn the roots of the willows to finish off the invasive plants.
