Students Salute Veterans at GI Vets Home

Posted: Updated:

It's been called the forgotten war, now heroes of the Korean conflict get their due.

On Veterans Day, the soldiers, sailors, and airmen of tomorrow paraded through the Veterans Home campus, carrying patriotic banners, along with a unity band comprised of students from different Grand Island high schools.

Veteran Kenny Brandt said, "I think it's great because they need to know the history of what the service men and women have done for this country to have our freedoms."

The parade featured a number of Korean War veterans like Brandt.

Plans are to send them to Washington, as Hall County raises money for a "hero flight".

Ken Gnadt said, "It's totally unbelievable how people have come out, the things that have happened, and the committee working on this is really, really dedicated."

Gnadt is a former mayor of Grand Island and said the city has a unique history of service to veterans between the VA Hospital and state veterans home. Plans call for the home to be re-located to Kearney.
