USDA Helps Bring Local Produce into Cafeterias

Posted: Updated:

The USDA is taking steps to get local produce into school lunches.

The organization approved grants to 71 organizations in 42 states in order to help get locally grown farm products into school cafeterias.

In Lyons, Neb. the Center for Rural Affairs has been approved for $99,600. The organization plans to help 10 pilot schools set up farm-to-school programs and hold farm summits with the money.

In Decorah, Iowa the Food & Fitness initiative will get a similar sum to expand their existing program to more schools. They have a goal of increasing their local food purchase by 200 percent.

These projects across the U.S. will serve more than 13,000 schools and bring locally grown food to 2.8 million students.
