Charges Dropped for Fairbury Officer Accused of Stealing Cruiser

Posted: Updated:

A Lincoln County judge has dismissed charges against a Fairbury police officer accused of stealing his department's newest police cruiser.

Judge Donald Rowlands signed the dismissal order Tuesday to drop the theft charge against 40-year-old Stanly Colby.

Colby was accused of stealing the police cruiser and leading officers on a chase in September.

Colby was arrested south of North Platte after Lincoln County officials were notified by Fairbury police that Colby had stolen the squad car and could be in the area.

Authorities say a chase took place after a North Platte police officer spotted the reported vehicle. Colby -- still in uniform -- was later arrested several miles south of North Platte on U.S. Highway 83.

The judge's notes say the dismissal was made in "the interest of justice."
