Two Generations of One Military Family Lead Minden Parade

Posted: Updated:

This Thanksgiving brings special meaning to a Minden family, as they share the holiday spirit among themselves and their community.

With a special salute, Minden's American Legion color guard starts off the annual Christmas parade, but it's not your typical color guard.

All six in line are members of the Albert family, representing two generations of soldiers.

It's a new tradition that wasn't expected when brothers Matt and Mark both joined the National Guard 26 years ago.

"Who knew 26 years ago what we'd be doing today, representing military and with family," said Chief Warrant Officer Mark Albert. "And great for Minden and great for the Alerts."

"It's been wonderful, we've always had the color guard as part of the parade, but yes, the last couple years it's turned out just to be the Albert family," said Christmas parade director Rita Crooks. "They just take it upon themselves to get together and come out when we ask them to show up so we're just happy to have them with us."

This parade kicks off many events throughout the Minden Christmas season.

One of the Talbert family members, Nicole Talbert McCoy will be deployed a second time next spring.

REPORTER'S NOTES: Friday night's activities included a Christmas Revue, with the parade kicking off two weeks of a pageant starting Saturday night and the first two Sundays in December.
