One of Nebraska's state senators has started an online petition asking for support for Medicaid expansion in Nebraska.
State Sen. Jeremy Nordquist Monday announced the launch of www.HealthCareFairness.com for Nebraskans interested in signing the petition.
"All Nebraskans, regardless of where they live or the industry in which they work, should be able to see a doctor when they are sick," said Nordquist.
Nordquist says the website is intended to engage the public while sending a message to elected officials who have blocked legislation that would expand Medicaid in Nebraska.
The expansion measure would help cover about 50,000 low-income adults who fall within a coverage gap for state aid or Affordable Care Act subsidies.
Nordquist, a Democrat, also called on Republican Gov. Dave Heineman to forfeit his state-funded health insurance until all Nebraskans can be covered.
Earlier this year, Nordquist introduced the Health Care Fairness Act, a bill that would prohibit elected state officials from getting taxpayer-subsidized coverage. LB 18 is still pending before the Legislature's Executive Committee.
Meanwhile, Speaker Greg Adams, of York, said Monday that Senator Kathy Campbell plans to introduce new legislation on the issue next session.
