December is the perfect time of
year to check out whether the State Treasurer's Office is holding any unclaimed
property in your name.
Nebraska State Treasurer Don
Stenberg says his office is holding more than $125 million in unclaimed
property for over 350,000 Nebraskans, former Nebraskans and their heirs.
"This holiday season give yourself a gift by checking the
Nebraska State Treasurer's Office to see if you have any unclaimed property
coming to you. You may be surprised at what you find," said Stenberg.
He says there is still enough time to search the records,
gather the necessary documentation, and file paperwork to have their checks in
hand by Christmas. He added that a check usually is mailed two to three weeks
after a claim is submitted and approved, so time is running low to receive the
money by Christmas.
Already in 2013, more than $10.3 million has been paid out,
up significantly from the 2012 total of $6.6 million.
The most common types of
unclaimed property are certificates of deposit, bank accounts, insurance
benefits, unpaid wages, among many others.
To search for unclaimed property, go to www.treasurer.org. Type a name in the box on the home
page, or click on the Search for Unclaimed Property tab in the left navigation
For amounts under $300, owners
may be able to file their claims online through the website.
