A proposal on its way to the State Board of Education could set standards for fine arts education in Nebraska.
Supporters of the proposal hope its adoption would increase the importance of visual and performing arts in schools. They would like to see its status on par with core subjects like math, science and social studies.
The draft will be discussed at a public hearing in January and then go to the board for consideration, likely in February.
If approved, classes that fall under the fine arts distinction could be made mandatory or be deemed as merely advisory.
