"Give Where You Live" Donations Exceed Expectations

Posted: Updated:

The first year of Kearney's "Give Where You Live" campaign is in the books, and donations nearly doubled what organizers expected.

Thursday's giving day exceeded expectations, with more than 1,100 donors pledging almost half a million dollars, which will help out about 100 different non–profits in Buffalo County.

The event started at Midnight Thursday morning with an online campaign.

Employees at the Kearney Area Community Foundation, who organized the event, said the excitement grew when they realized their initial goal was going to be passed.

"We just thought 'wow, we could meet our goal'. We had a quiet goal of $250,000 and so the fact that we made the 250 thousand and almost half a million," said KACF Assistant Director Julie Stepanek. "We are so blessed in this community for having that so we did a nice little "hurrah" here in the office with everybody that saw us reach that goal."

Stepanek said it was humbling to see people bring in donations to give to multiple non–profits throughout the day.

Officials hope to make this an annual event.
