Non-Profit Calls For Nebraska Lawmakers to Cut Ties with ALEC

Posted: Updated:

Bold Nebraska is calling for State Senator Jim Smith to resign as state chair of the American Legislative Exchange Council.

This, after a report that says the group backs controversial corporate-friendly legislation and is supported by tobacco, oil, and pharmaceutical interests.

Non-profit Bold Nebraska's statement released Saturday said, "In ALEC board documents published by "The Guardian", ALEC proposed that state chairs like Nebraska State Senator Jim Smith — and possibly other ALEC members, who in Nebraska include State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Beau McCoy, and Sens. Mark Christenson, Thomas Hansen and Tyson Larson — take an oath to ALEC:"I will act with loyalty and put the interests of the organization [ALEC] first.""

Senator Tyson Larson reacted on Twitter Saturday, saying, "An oath? What a ludicrous notion. Far left grasping for straws to defame people."
