Local Salvation Army Fundraisers Falling Short

Posted: Updated:

A local non-profit is worried their holiday fund drive is falling short.

Salvation Army bell ringer Lori Crooks is working to change that. She has been outside Hastings businesses nearly every day she could this year. It's her way of giving back.

"I don't always have a monetary way of helping back, so I like to donate where I can in the community and help the community back that way," she said.

More volunteers are needed, not only in Hastings, but nationwide.

"Volunteerism does seem to be down a little bit this year, especially in bell ringing in the frigid cold that we've experienced," said Major Tamayo.

Donations are down too.

This is the Salvation Army's biggest fundraiser of the year; but in Hastings, Tamayo said they're only at about 45 percent of their $84,000 goal.

The Red Kettle Campaign is 10 percent behind this time last year. Their Angel Tree Toy Drive is 35 percent behind.

But, the need isn't slowing down as the Salvation Army prepares to distribute boxes of food this week.

"They'll be thousands of people [helped], about 350, 400 families times two boxes and so it really adds up over time," said Major Tamayo.

It's the type of donation Crooks received not long ago. She said the Salvation Army helped by giving her food and providing rent and utility assistance.

That's why she rings the bell.

"I'm just really grateful for all the help I got," she said.

You can give to the Salvation Army in a nearby kettle, at your local chapter's location or online.

The Hastings Salvation Army also needs nonperishable food and toy donations.

You can also still sign up to ring bells.
