Keeping customers coming through the doors is important throughout the year, especially during the holiday season.
And one local area is attracting shoppers in a unique way.
For many years now the Holdrege Chamber of Commerce has been putting on a seasonal promotion to help keep shopping local, instead of at large chain stores.
Beginning Nov. 7 and running until Dec. 20, shoppers have the chance to fill stamp cards with $200 in spending at participating chamber stores for the chance to win prizes.
As part of the Christmas Wonderland promotion, shoppers who submit those cards will have a chance to win up to $5,000 in prizes.
This also helps officials track local holiday spending. Last year, around $1.5 million was counted in sales.
"This promotion is helping track that much in sales each year and I think it really does entice people to spend their money locally when they know there's a chance at some big rewards," said Holdrege Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Katie Ostgren. "There's always rewards for shopping locally but this is kind of an extra thanks to those customers."
Thirty-three area chamber businesses are participating this year.
Not only has the Christmas Wonderland promotion been a big gain for local businesses, but Small Business Saturday, which was officially introduced to Holdrege this year, has also played a big role for the local economy.
