Public Comment Period Open for State Fine Arts Standards

Posted: Updated:

The public comment period is open for a proposal that is on its way to the State Board of Education with a public hearing scheduled in a few weeks.

The proposal in question would seek to create a set of standards for fine arts education in Nebraska.

Supporters of the proposal hope its adoption would increase the importance of visual and performing arts in schools. They would like to see its status on par with core subjects like math, science and social studies.

The draft will be discussed at public hearings January 16 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. One of the public hearings will be held in Kearney at 76 Plaza Blvd, South Wing Rooms E and F.

Other ways to leave a comment for the board include contacting your education board representative directly or by going to to fill out a survey.

The state board then plans to consider the proposal in its Feb. 4 meeting. No standards are final until adopted by the Nebraska Board of Education.

The public comment period ends on January 17.
