Proposed Bill Would Allow Neb. Farmers Chance to Mow Ditches More Often

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska lawmakers began the 2014 legislative session Wednesday, and among the bills possibly seeing debate time this year is a measure that would allow farmers more chances to harvest hay along state highways.

LB698, submitted by Sen. Tyson Larson, would let farmers mow and harvest in state highway right-of-ways each year, starting on July 15. Farmers currently are allowed to do this only once every other year.

Farmers would still have to apply to the Nebraska Department of Roads for a permit to mow and harvest the grass.

Larson says state employees often mow the ditches, and letting farmers handle it would generate revenue for the state and agricultural producers.
