Fire Halts Interstate 80 Traffic Near Hampton

Posted: Updated:

A fire that caused dangerous driving conditions on Interstate 80 Tuesday may have started almost a week ago.

Hampton Fire Chief Steve Arndt said he thinks a Hamilton County fire rekindled from a burn permit issued on Thursday.

It burned 100 acres of corn field and grass along I-80 south of Hampton.

Arndt said it started a quarter of a mile north of 10th and U roads.

Hampton Fire was called in shortly after 1:00 p.m.

Arndt said his department could have handled the fire had it not been for the wind.

Henderson and Aurora Fire were called in to help.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Hamilton County Sheriff's Office also helped control traffic on the interstate, stopped because of heavy smoke.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for Thursday.

Experts say now is the time to check any burns you've started in the past several days and make sure they're completely out.
