Hastings - The Hastings College women's basketball team took on NAIA No. 9 Morningside in the NAIA DII Women's Basketball Game of the Week Saturday as the Broncos defense led to the 64-55 victory at Lynn Farrell Arena while increasing its winning streak to 12.
The Broncos were able to force 26 uncharacteristic Mustang turnovers while also holding MC to just 30 percent shooting on the day. The last time Morningside was held to 55 points or less was when Hastings did it back on Feb. 18, 2012 when Hastings defeated the Mustangs 69-42.
The Mustangs held a 15-14 lead with 10:42 remaining in the first half when the Broncos began to take over. Cami Bruckman started a 11-1 run with a three-pointer followed by a lay-up from Laurel Zwiener.
After a Mustang free-throw, Abby Jackson knocked down a three of her own followed by back-to-back buckets from Jamie Van Kirk and Sierra Williamson to give the Broncos a 26-16 advantage. Hastings would lead by 10 at the break 32-22 holding Morningside to its lowest output for a half this season.
Hastings would continue its pressure in the second half while also extending its lead to as many as 15 points when Bruckman would connect on a bucket in the paint as the Broncos led 48-33 with 11:11 remaining.
Morningside would continue to fight back cutting the deficit down to six at 57-51 when Leann Osten would score on a lay-up after a steal.
That was as close as the Mustangs would get as the Broncos would put the game away from the charity stripe along with a late lay-up from Bruckman.
Bruckman led the Broncos with a game high 17 points as Van Kirk added 16 and Zwiener finished with 15.
Morningside was led by Allison Bachman as she finished with 14 points.
With the win, Hastings improves to 18-2 (9-2) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Jan. 20 as Concordia comes to town with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. at Lynn Farrell Arena.
