Kearney, Neb. – Central Oklahoma finished the first half on a 12-0 run and never looked back in beating the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team, 82-70, Saturday afternoon in Edmond.
The Bronchos improve to 10-6 (5-4) while the Lopers fall to 1-8 on the road and are 6-9 (3-6) overall.
Thanks to 15 early points from Trenton sophomore Laramey Lewis, UNK got out to a 32-28 lead by the 3:39 mark of the first half. UCO had held a 23-16 advantage but the Lopers hit four of their nine three pointers to erase that deficit.
A bucket by 5-11 sophomore forward Julia Mason started the Broncho run with UNK missing four shots on one possession. For the game, Kearney had 15 offensive rebounds but only 11 second chance points. On the other hand, UCO tallied 24 points off its 18 offensive caroms.
Two free throws from 5-5 sophomore guard Jordan Ward tied the game at 32 and then 6-0 sophomore forward Whitney Dunn scored six points in the final 1:47 to make it 40-32 at the break. In the final 3:39, UNK was 0 for 7 from the field with two turnovers.
Central Oklahoma didn't let the Lopers get closer than five points in the second half as they shot 40% (14 of 35) from the field.
Eleven different Bronchos scored with 5-10 senior guard Jill Bryan (16) and 5-5 senior guard Morgan Britney (14) leading the way. Off the bench, Dunn had 13 points and eight rebounds in just 12 minutes with Mason at 11 boards (eight defensive) and nine points.
UCO also took advantage of 19 UNK turnovers and were out rebounded by just one, 47-46.
Kearney bombed away from the outside for a second straight contest, finishing 9 of 24 from behind the arc. Lewis (3 of 6) had the best day with six others making at least one triple.
Picking up two quick fouls, junior post Amarah Williams (St. Louis) made up for lost time by scoring all of her team-high 17 points after the break. She was 7 of 8 from the field and 3 of 4 at the line, in addition to having four rebounds.
Lewis (15) and Arizona freshman guard Alexa Hogberg (12) also were in double figures with Beatrice senior Shelby Zimmerman supplying eight rebounds and seven rebounds off the bench.
Hogberg went 5 of 5 at the line to have a season-high point total with Lewis grabbing a career-best 11 rebounds (eight defensive).
