This cold weather is great for the perfect bowl of chili, and on Sunday Hastings residents had a chance to taste and vote on their favorite recipe during the second annual "Super Bowl of Chili" cook–off.
It's a fundraiser for Royal Families Kids Camp and Teen Reach Adventure Camp. They're week– long outings for foster kids, aimed at creating good memories by learning how to trust people in a faith–based, positive experience.
Officials say events like this also help raise awareness about how much abuse is in their community.
"Our statistics tell us one out of three girls and one out of five boys will have experienced some kind of abuse in their life by the age of 18," said program director Dan Buhr. "So any kind of program that can instill good values and help them feel confident about themselves is just crucial in their young lives."
Proceeds from Sunday's fundraiser will go toward operating costs and scholarships for kids to attend the camps.
