GI Students Win Day on the Farm

Posted: Updated:

Farming has gone high tech, but many Nebraska kids couldn't even tell you where milk or chicken nuggets come from.

Now some Grand Island second graders will have that opportunity. They won a contest sponsored by Nebraska Farm Bureau.

With help from their teachers at Jefferson Elementary, they made a video featuring an original song about what they'd learned.

Student Emanuel Flores said, "Agriculture, what stuff comes from. If we didn't have Nebraska agriculture we wouldn't have stuff like clothes, or any stuff."

They'll be visiting a couple of farms in the Kearney area, including a dairy farm to learn where milk and cheese come from.

"They don't just show up on the shelves in the supermarket, they start on the farm, whether it's a crop farm or animal farm. It's important to understand the steps it goes through to get to the store," teacher Ashley Mueller said. She grew up on a farm near Holdrege.

The kids didn't know they'd won until the visitors arrived for a surprise award ceremony. The winning video is available on YouTube.
