Mary Lanning Healthcare's 'Operation Education' Tours Continue through March

Posted: Updated:

For some children, the hospital can seem like a scary place. But Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings is hoping to ease some of those fears.

When it's all said and done, about 750 students will have taken part in Mary Lanning's ‘Operation Education' tours.

Over the next week third-graders from around the Hastings area are getting a peek at what the hospital is all about.

The students hear from surgical professionals on what they can expect during an operation on themselves or a loved one, and learn about pre surgical preparation, the equipment and monitors and also have the opportunity to tour the MLH Surgical Center.

"The purpose is really to alleviate some of those anxieties that are around hospital visits, specifically for surgeries," said Caress Mainlander, an RN with Mary Lanning Healthcare. "And to just kind of explain what it is that we do, the process and how it works, and to take some of those fears away."

Last month preschoolers toured the Pediatric Unit and learned tips on safety, including helmet and seat belt safety.

Fifth-graders will get their turn in March, with visits to the Medical Service Building to learn about rehabilitation and recovery from sports injuries.
