Bruning Joins Race for Governor

Posted: Updated:

At the eleventh hour, Attorney General Jon Bruning has joined the Republican race for governor.

Bruning made the announcement in a video posted to his campaign website, saying, "We need a governor that's willing to stand up to the federal government and President Obama and say enough is enough."

Bruning enters a crowded race, but has won more statewide elections than the rest of the field. However, he lost his most recent statewide bid, when he lost the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in 2012.

In his introduction video, the attorney general tells the story of how his family founded the town of Bruning. He says he wants to follow in the footsteps of Governors Mike Johanns and Dave Heineman.

Several high profile candidates are already in the race, including former Senate nominee Pete Ricketts and State Auditor Mike Foley. In addition, State Senators Tom Carlson and Beau McCoy are running, along with attorney Bryan Slone. Another state lawmaker, Sen. Charlie Janssen recently withdrew from the race.
