Kearney Kiwanis Clubs Draw Thousands For Annual Fundraiser

Posted: Updated:

Sunrise Middle School was filled with thousands as the Kearney Kiwanis Clubs held their annual pancake day and garage sale.

It's a fundraiser to help support children through dental programs and by working with the Children's Museum. More than 2,000 people were served pancakes by Kearney Noon, Dobytown, and Golden K clubs along with two high-school key clubs, all in an effort to give back to the community.

"I just want to say thanks to the people of Kearney because they're very supportive," said Charlie Pickens, pancake organizer.

Pickens said another thousand or so did not attend, but bought tickets just to make a donation to the project.

The garage sale was also crowded as guests rummaged through items after eating their breakfast.

For over 20 years, the Golden K club has put on this sale along with the pancake feed in hopes of raising money to benefit area children.

"Our goal is to raise at least $1,000, and we hope we did that. Last year we raised over $1,000," said Cindy Pickel, Golden K member and garage sale co-chair.

Everything from houseware to children's games could be spotted on the tables.

"The eighty-plus Golden K Kiwanis family come together and bring out items from their basements and garages," said Pickel.

They were joined by the Kiwanis Aktion Club, a group that raises awareness for those who live with a disability.

For those searching for that next good read, the Kearney Area Literacy Council also had their annual book sale. Those funds will go towards tutoring adults, children, as well as the public library.

"Last year we were in the high $700 - $800, and this year we're hoping for $1,000," said Dean Ringlein, Literacy Council book sale chairman.

Organizers say the day couldn't have been a success without the community coming out. All leftover items from the garage sale will go to the Salvation Army, with the exception of their books, which will go to the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office.
