Heineman Says Counties Need to Work on Controlling Spending, Lowering Property Taxes

Posted: Updated:

Governor Dave Heineman says property taxes are too high and he's asking local governments to control their spending to bring them down.

Heineman says 25 counties raised property taxes last year by more than 10 percent.

Some say state mandates have forced counties to raise property taxes. But Heineman says it's about making priorities, and he offered to address specific mandates if counties have a problem.

The governor added Wednesday that he supports lowering the valuation of farm and ranch land from 75 percent to 65 percent.
