Republican Primary for AG Seat Could See Most Names in Over 20 Years

Posted: Updated:

Following years of non-competitive republican primaries for the attorney general seat, current attorney general Jon Bruning's decision to run for governor has set the stage for a heated race among republicans vying for the position.

The GOP could see four candidates facing off in the primaries.

Lincoln attorney Doug Peterson and state Sen. Pete Pirsch of Omaha have already declared. Omaha attorney Brian Buescher and Lincoln attorney Mike Hilgers are both looking seriously at the race.

This year's race would become the first contested primary for Republicans since 1990, when Don Stenberg defeated then-Lancaster County Attorney Mike Heavican and Lincoln attorney John DeCamp for the job.

Since 1990, Stenberg, and then Bruning, ran unopposed each year.

Fremont attorney Janet Stewart is running unopposed in the Democratic primary, which is only three months away.
