Attempted Murder Suspect Found Incompetent

Posted: Updated:

A man accused of trying to kill his wife has been found unfit to stand trial.

Jesus Parra of Grand Island has been ordered to undergo treatment at the Lincoln Regional Center, following a hearing in front of Judge Teresa Luther.

Parra faces nine felony counts including attempted murder and child abuse. The case dates back to last spring, when neighbors were shocked to see a girl covered in blood asking for help.

Police determined Parra had slashed his estranged wife with a knife, while their kids were present.

Parra was set to go on trial in about a month. However, it's unclear if that will go on as planned. Hall County Attorney Mark Young told NTV that Parra would need to be "stable" before a trial could take place.

Young said it's possible if treatment goes well that Parra could be deemed competent. Under Judge Luther's order, when Parra's treatment is complete, he must return to the Hall County Jail and return to court.

During Parra's first appearance in court last April, he made several angry outbursts.

"I would like to talk to all the people who have opened their mouths, saying stupid things," Parra said through an interpreter.

"They tried to poison me all these years. Look at me," he said pointing to his head.

He pleaded, "Isn't that a felony, isn't that a crime?"

Parra continued, saying his wife tortured him with an electrical instrument over the course of four days at a motel in Garden City, KS.

Then this past summer, Parra was offered a plea agreement, but left it on the table.

Following that, he underwent a mental evaluation at the jail, which resulted in this week's competency hearing.
