Construction Takes Over Parts of Downtown Kearney

Posted: Updated:

A major street project is having an impact on shoppers and business owners in downtown Kearney.

Work on Monday blocked off every parking spot on the west side of 22nd street on Central Avenue.

Monday is the only day those parking spots will be blocked off, but on other work days other sections of downtown will be blocked off.

The project, which costs just over $461,600 will put a new lighting and irrigation system from 22nd Street to 25th street on Central Avenue.

The project has been in the works for three years. Over the next several months, workers will be setting in wiring, placing the irrigation systems, putting up the light bases and setting the new concrete.

The project is expected to be done by July 1, just in time for Cruise Nite. The current street lights have not been replaced since 1983, and assistant city manager Suzanne Brodine says they are feeling their age.

"We needed new street lights so we could both buy replacement parts which we can't for the existing lights. So this will be LEDs -- brighter, clearer light; certainly going to save the city a lot of money," said Brodine.

Brodine did not have an exact number how much money it would save the city on electricity. There are also future talks of putting in speakers on the light posts to enhance upcoming parades.
