Huskers Struggle in 9-2 Defeat

Lincoln - After averaging over nine runs and over 13 hits during afive-game winning streak, the Husker offense went silent on Wednesday afternoonin a 9-2 loss to Northern Colorado. Nebraska, now 9-6 on the year, totaled justseven hits on the day, including five from the first four hitters in the Huskerlineup.

Nine Husker pitchers took the mound and gave up a season-high 15hits to the Bears, who picked up their first road win of 2014. Freshman Ben Millerwas a bright spot on the mound for Nebraska, as the lefty threw 2.0 innings ofshutout relief with three strikeouts.

At the plate, senior Michael Pritchard extended his consecutiveon-base streak to 57 games after a he lined a two-out single of the middle inthe first innings. Pritchard is now tied for the longest active streak in thecountry with Texas' Mark Payton.

Northern Colorado (5-13) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the topof the first with three hits off freshman starter Jake Hohensee. The Lincolnnative was in position to get out of the inning without any damage, but atwo-out double and a wild pitch plated the pair of runs. The Bears pushed theirlead to 4-0 with a bases-loaded infield single in the third followed by anotherRBI single in the fifth inning.

The Huskers cut the Bears' lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifthon an RBI groundout by Taylor Fish, but the Bears got the run back and addedanother in the top of the sixth, pushing its lead to 6-1.

The Bears tacked on three more runs before the Huskers plated arun in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from AustinChristensen.

The Huskers resume their current homestand on Friday when the UCIrvine Anteaters travels to Lincoln for a three-game series that starts onFriday, March 14, at 4:35 p.m. The series continues on Saturday at 2:05 p.m.and concludes on Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
